paradoxa, portrait

Image of Glaucophyceae

Description:

Cyanophora (sigh-an-off-oar-a) paradoxa, often regarded as an enigmatic alga because it did not fall into any of the familiar groups. Photosynthesis occurs in the blue-green-colored cyanelles, endosymbiotic structures that appear to be an evolutionary intermediate between blue-green algae and chloroplasts. With two flagella inserting below the apex of the cell, one directed to the front and a longer one trailing. Differential interference microscopy.
