Thraxan species

Description:

Resting on a granite boulder it was very difficult to focus on. This is very typical behavior of both Thraxan and its sister genus Anthrax species here on the Granite Belt.These bee-flies were considered in the genus Anthrax till separated out by Yeates & Lambkin in 1998. Probably the easiest visual difference is that Thraxan have patches of white medially as seen clearly here. Wing length 16mm. Many Anthrax have spotted wings. Many Thraxan species cannot be distinguished as females.
