They don’t seem to key out in for California Tylopilus species or any in the Bessette book. The caps are up to about 14.2 cm broad. the color of the caps varies from a dull yellowish tan to brown with occasional hints of lilac. The pores stain brown as it appears other parts also exhibit some browning also. The spore print is reddish brown and the spores are subfusiform and are approx. 9.0-10.0 X 2.9-3.4 microns.The taste was not bitter. A thin but distinct reticulation covers the upper half of the stipe. They were found growing primarily under madrone but there was one live oak nearby. After reviewing the Mykoweb site and the guttulate spores, I’m now comfortable with the Tylopilus indecisus id. Have added a new photo of another specimen from the same site and a photo of the spores. While they may be a little on the lower end of the size range, they are in the area, certainly within my range of measurement error. : For more information about this, see the observation page at Mushroom Observer.
