Description:
Description: Butterdean Wood, East Lothian, Scotland. Thanks as always to Boris (thaptor) for identifying my beetle photos. Originally classified in the Bark Beetle family Scolytidae. This family has been found to be a highly-derived group of weevils. They have a symbiotic relationship with Ambrosia Fungi sp. "gardens" of which they tend in galleries in rotting wood. Dispersing adult beetles carry fungal spores to establish new gardens elsewhere. (Info from Wikipedia). Date: 11 March 2012, 15:23. Source: Trypodendron domesticum (European Hardwood Ambrosia Bark-beetle). Author: S. Rae from Scotland, UK.
