Description: holly gilia, Aliciella latifolia subsp. latifolia, California, White Mountains, Coldwater Canyon, Chalfant Valley - Owens Valley drainage, elevation 1652 m (5420 ft). Just caught the first flowers of this later-flowering annual. This distinctive species of rocky habitats is centered in the Mojave Desert of the southwestern United States, and extends shortly into adjacent portions of the Great Basin and Sonoran deserts and the Colorado Plateau. Like many other warm desert species, it approaches its northwestern and high-elevation limits here in the southern part of the White Mountains. Date: 21 April 2017, 17:17.
