There are male and female plants. Stems are mostly to 20 cm long, usually much-branched and with sparse, short, recurved hairs. Leaves and stipules are in whorls of 5 or 6, linear and 2–8 mm long; apex is acute to shortly acuminate usually with a short point; margins and midrib are more or less scabrous. Flowerheads are terminal or in the uppermost axils and 1–3-flowered. Flowers are unisexual, 4-petalled, white and 2–3 mm long. Styles are 2-fid. Stamens 4. Fruit are 3–4 mm long, deeply lobed, black-brown. Flowering is in spring and summer. Grows in woodland, forest and grassland, common and widespread. Date: 14 September 2014, 13:18.
