Rubber was one of the main sources of income for the British colonial authorities in Malaya. Because of this, Malayan National Liberation Army rebels believed that be destroying rubber plantations they could expel Britain from Malaya by denying the British colonial authorities revenue from Malayan resources. However, an economic boom and scramble for raw resources following the onset of the Korean War caused the value of rubber to rise sharply, helping to finance the British counterinsurgency campaign against the communist guerrillas and eventually leading to their defeat.
