Kayu yang beraroma khas ini merupakan sebuah kayu yang sangat laku dipasaran penjualan kayu dunia, karena kualitas kayunya yang baik maka kayu ini kerap dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan tiang, dinding dan lantai bangunan. Selain itu, juga dipakai untuk kebutuhan perkapalan. Sebutan lain juga, pohon Kapur di Kalimantan disebut juga sebagai Ampadu, Amplang, Kapur, Kayatan, Keladan, Melampit, Mengkayat, Mohoi, Muri, dan Sintok. Di Sumatera selain disebut Kapur atau Barus tanaman ini dinamai Haburuan atau dalam bahasa Pakpak disebut Kaberun. Pohon Kayu Kapur ukuran yang besar dan tinggi. Diameter batangnya mencapai 70 centi meter bahkan mencapai hingga 150 centi meter dengan tinggi pohon rata-rata 60 meter. Sementara, kulit pohonnya berwarna coklat dan coklat kemerah-merahan pada bagian dalam batang. Dan apabila dipotong maka mengeluarkan aroma khas tersendiri. Pohon Kayu Kapur (Dryobalanops Aromatica) semakin sulit ditemukan di habitatnya. Pohon ini termasuk salah satu tanaman langka di Indonesia. Bahkan IUCN Redlist memasukkannya dalam status konservasi Critically Endangered atau Kritis. Status ini merupakan status keterancaman dengan tingkatan paling tinggi sebelum status punah.
