This is an introduced rather than a native species (although there are two rare native species, Unspotted and Narrow Lungwort), and it is often found as a "garden escape". The plants were growing beside a footpath: 1213573. Many plants have the specific name "officinalis", indicating a former medicinal use, the Medieval Latin word "officina" referring, at least in a later development of its meaning, to an apothecary's pharmacy. In the case of Lungwort, the blotching of the leaves was thought to resemble that of diseased lungs, and it was therefore believed that the plant would be effective in treating such diseases.
