Leaves are 1–7 cm long and about 2 mm wide; their sheaths are slightly longer than broad. Flowers are solitary or in terminal heads, loosely enclosed by broad-elliptic and scarious involucral bracts. Calyx is tubular, 5-toothed, with 5 scarious strips marking the fusion lines of the sepals. Petals are 5 and pink. Stamens 10. Styles 2. Flowering is in spring and early summer.
