Yellow-breasted Chat, Pennsylvania (42924320082)

Image of Icteriidae

Description:

Description: Now that I've nailed down the weird cadence of their mimicry, I hear them all over the place. There are at least two chats at this park. I've been in a war of photo attrition with both of them. The one in the other corner of the park gave me a crappy look that ended up in explore the other week. Whatever. This is the chat from the other corner. I heard him singing when I first passed through his space on the way to a patch of dewberries. He did not show himself. What a jerk. An hour and a half later I had found enough ripe dewberries to make some jam with. Good. Almost slid off a sheer cliff into the Susquehanna while doing it, and I almost certainly made contact with a ton of poison ivy, but I'll deal with it. Dewberries are tasty. On the way back, I heard him again. I waited. He eventually popped out. I aimed and utilized my usual spray-and-pray shooting strategy. He saw me and was three bushes deep five seconds later. Luckily, it looks like the autofocus came through in the clutch. All this rambling for a half-decent, but not super-amazing, photo. That's how much these things drive me nuts. Suck it, yellow-breasted chats. Date: 23 June 2018, 10:15. Source: Rainy morning chat. Author: Andrew Weitzel from Lancaster, PA, USA.
