Cimbex americana (Thanks to Mr and Mrs Kiwi for the ID)On the summit of Mt Hight, White Mountains, New Hampshire USA. July 2008.Probably just resting on this spruce - they usually eat willow, birch, and maple (and of course elm, but that's locally extinct)
