Exact native range obscure but believed either from Malaysia or Philippines. Plant cultivated and the nut is chewed along with betel leaf (Piper betle), gambier (Uncaria gambir), lime powder. Claimed to have antidepressant properties, but it may be addictive.Synonym(s):Areca cathechu Burm.f. Areca faufel Gaertn. Areca himalayana Griff. ex H.Wendl. Areca hortensis Lour.
