Description:
This impressive group of caterpillars, Datana contracta, was feeding on a Water Oak, Quercus nigra. Specific ID of this group is tricky, but this one appears to be distinctive. (Compare images and discussion at BugGuide and see also Wagner, Caterpillars Eastern North America, p. 294.)
