Parotocinclus cristatus is sometimes referred to as the dwarf pleco, although the term "pleco" (a shortened form of "plecostomus") is generally used to refer only to members of the subfamily Hypostominae, and its use to refer to other loricariids is less common.[3] Despite this, "dwarf pleco" is sometimes applied to the genus Parotocinclus as a whole, including in academic literature.[4]

Parotocinclus cristatus is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van de harnasmeervallen (Loricariidae).[1] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1977 door Garavello.

Загальна довжина сягає 4 см. Голова доволі широка, трохи сплощена зверху. Очі невеличкі. Задня скронева кістка неперфорована. Тулуб подовжений, приосадкуватий, вкритий кістковими пластинками. На череві пластини нерівно розташовані. Спинний плавець низький, довгий. Грудні та черевні плавці широкі, проте останні поступаються розмірами першим. Жировий плавець відсутній. Хвостовий плавець витягнутий, усічений.
Основний фон кремовий, по якому проходить суцільний малюнок, який складається сірувато-фіолетових ліній. Промені плавців забарвлені преривчастими темними лініями. Черево майже позбавлено цього малюнку.
Демерсальна риба. Воліє до чистої води. Зустрічається на мілині або на середній течії в річках і струмках з піщано-гравійним дном. Утворює невеличкі косяки. Активна вдень. Живиться м'якими водоростями, личинками комах.
Мешкає у прибережних річках на півдні штату Баїя (Бразилія).
