Plasmodiid apicomplexa, gamonts in erythrocytes; haemozoin formed; merogony in liver parenchyma with formation of giant, macroscopic meronts µmerocysts); vectors, if known, Culicoides; oocysts in head and thorax; about 25 species, mostly from bats and monkeys, but also from squirrels and hippopotamuses; most species in African and Asian mammals. Type species: Hepatocystis simiae.
