Flattened gliding flagellate, with anterior mastigophore; two flagella insert near the distal end of the mastigophore. One flagellum extends forwards and a thin filament projects beyond the tip of the mastigophore; the other runs backwards to lie under the cell. Mastigophore beats slows during motion. Body 8 - 14 µm. Bacterivorous, food taken ventrally. One species. Temporary cysts formed, cryptobiotic (can dry out). Common in soil, also from fresh-waters. Type species: A. proboscidea
