Terebellid worms, about species, one of which has been reported from very hot deep hydrothermal vents. Genus name derived from the DSV Alvin, a submersible vehicle used to explore deep ocean biology. Often referred to as Pompeii worms, getting their name from the Roman city of Pompeii that was destroyed following an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.
