This is a direct image from a flat-bed scanner of a plant collected from the site, which contained Ophioglossum plants estimated at more than 1,000 in number.
this is one of the tiny ferns. In Israel it is very rare occuring in a few spots along the coastal plain. You can see them in November-December, after that the grass will cover all.
Ophioglossum polyphyllum is a tiny desert fern. In Israel it is endangered, known from only 2 site. It grows in extreme desert and sprouts only in rainy years. We were lucky this year to see it for a month or so. Here u can see the spore stalk just after dispercal.
