Size: small and slim. Plumage: breeding female more colourful than male; wings narrow and pointed; feathers thicker than in calidridine waders. Other characters: slender neck and small slender head; bill slightly shorter than head; legs relatively short; feet with long hind toe and basal webs and lobes on front toes. Female larger than male and sexual roles reversed. Expert swimmers; spin and dip in water.
