Indigenous to Hawaii, with breeding colonies on Oahu and Kauai and Northwest islands. Unlike other boobies which nest on the ground, this species builds crude stick nests on shrubs and trees. Kilauea Point on Kaua'i is a large nesting colony. Dives up to 10m for fish and squid.
