Description

Annual herb with trailing stems up to c. 1 m long, widely cultivated as a garden plant and often used in salads. Leaves nearly circular, 3-15 cm in diameter, green to blue-green above, paler beneath, distinctly peltate with the petiole, 5-30 cm long, attached nearly in the centre of the lamina. Flowers yellow, orange or red, often with darker markings at the base of the petals, 2.5-6 cm in diameter, with a basal spur 2.5-3 cm long. Fruit c. 2 cm in diameter, with 3 one-seeded segments.
