Somewhat tufted, perennial, with short caudex ; stems subscapose, 5-15 cm. high, minutely strigose or glabrous, few-dowered ; stipules ovate, acute, entire or often few-toothed ; leaves basal, pinnately 3-foliolate, with the middle leaflet long-petiolulate, sparingly hirsute or glabrate, shining ; leaflets 1-2 cm. long, very broadly obovate or sometimes nearly orbicular in outline, entire at the base, upwards coarsely 5-7-toothed, with the terminal tooth generally smaller ; flowers on slender pedicels, about 1 cm. in diameter ; hypanthium strigose in fruit, 7-8 mm. in diameter; bractlets ovate or oval, generally obtuse and only half as long as the ovate, usually acute sepals, which are about 5 mm. long ; petals orbicular or 'broadly ovate, slightly retuse, longer than the sepals; stamens about 20; pistils many ; styles filiform.

Distribution : Mountains of California.

Potentilla grayi is a species of cinquefoil known by the common name Gray's cinquefoil.[2]

Description

Potentilla grayi is a small upright plant growing 10 to 20 centimeters tall. The leaves are ternate, divided into three leaflets. Each leaflet is roughly oval in shape and has usually seven blunt teeth along the edges. The inflorescence is a cyme of one to five flowers each with five yellow petals.

Distribution

Potentilla grayi is endemic to the Sierra Nevada of California, where it grows in high mountain meadows.
