Asarum caudatum has a bioregional distribution from British Columbia south to Klamath Ranges, North Coast Ranges and San Francisco Bay Area of California; the range extends east to Montana. The species occurs in moist spaces at elevations less than 2200 meters.
Also known by the common name British Columbia wildginger, this plant exhibits a generally spreading habit, forming a loose mat, with rhizomes near the soil surface. Leaf blades are uniformly green, and the inflorescence has a peduncle that is more or less horizontal. Flowers manifest a calyx tube whose inner surface is white with a single median red stripe; lobes are maroon. Chromosomes: 2n=26
