Hollyhock

This impressive wild hollyhock blooms at the end of spring and in early summer. In Israel it is confined to the north part of the counrty and penetrates also the heights of Mt Hermon.

this is a seedling of Alcea rosea, a common Mediterranean species. On the right cotyledon you can see the remains of the seed.

Holyhocks (Alcea) are such impressive plants, this one was 2.5 m. tall. Along the Jordan Valley populations of alcea setosa have rather pale flowers compared with the darker forms of the inner country.
