Eastern slopes of the Andes in the Macas-Mendez region (Ecuador).
Holotype: NMW 15750 according to Roze, 1996 [219].
Type-locality: Ecuador
Three subspecies, namely M. s. steindachneri (Werner, 1901); M. s. orcesi Roze, 1967; and M. s. petersi Roze, 1967, were recognized by Roze, 1967, Am. Mus. Novit. 2287:1-60[43-45]; subsequently, Roze, 1983 [dated 1982], Mem. Inst. Butantan 46:305-338[332] elevated M. s. petersi to specific status.
