Found near sandy bottoms of inner bays where it feeds on mollusks and polychaetes. Also enters brackish waters (Ref. 559). Feeds on fish, zoobenthos and plants (Ref. 26986).

Found in bays, shallow rocky reefs, and in brackish waters (Ref. 41299). Feeds on mollusks and polychaetes. Spawns in the spring and summer months (Ref. 41299). It is parasitised by the monogenean A. spari on the fins and body surface (Ref. 124057).

為各地魚市場上常見的高級食用魚，味道鮮美，料理方式以紅燒或鹽烤為主，若為新鮮魚體，亦可製成生魚片食之。全年均產，以秋季至翌年春季較佳；繁殖季節在每年的2月到5月，以4月最盛，在3月開始即可在台灣沿海捕撈魚苗。目前已是臺灣重要的養殖魚種之ㄧ，以箱網養殖和陸上池塘養殖為主，已可完全養殖，產量穩定。臺灣西南及南部地區，以及離島之澎湖等地均有養殖魚出售。目前市場所見的黑鯛大多是來自養殖漁塭。由於其對環境之適應能力較強，人工繁殖技術亦已成熟，種苗來源穩定，所以亦是各縣市政府海域放流的重要對象魚種。

體高而側扁，體呈橢圓形，背緣隆起，腹緣圓鈍。頭中大，前端尖。口端位；上下頜約等長；上頜前端具圓錐齒2-3對，兩側具臼齒4-5列，下頜前端具圓錐齒2-3對，兩側具臼齒3列；鋤骨、腭骨及舌面皆無齒。體被薄櫛鱗，背鰭及臀鰭基部均具鱗鞘，基底被鱗；側線完整，側線至硬棘背鰭基底之間有5.5列鱗。背鰭單一，硬棘部及軟條部間無明顯缺刻，硬棘強，第IV或V棘最長；臀鰭小，與背鰭鰭條部同形，第II棘強大；胸鰭中長，長於腹鰭；尾鰭叉形。體灰黑色而且銀色光澤，有若干不太明顯之暗褐色橫帶；側線起點近主鰓蓋上角及胸鰭腋部各一黑點。除胸鰭為橘黃色外，其餘各鰭均為暗灰褐色。
棲地

黑鯛是鯛科家族中對水質的容忍性最強的魚類，但其性敏感多疑，警戒性強，會以尾鰭挖土，行動極為敏捷。屬於溫、熱帶沿岸雜食性底棲魚類，喜棲於砂泥底之內灣水域，有時會進入河口區域。以底棲甲殼類、軟體動物、棘皮動物及多毛類為食。雌雄同體，且會性轉變，在3-4歲前全為雄性，其後才轉變為雌性。
