Diagnosed by having numerous mandibular teeth (25-41); a large number of tertiary premaxillary teeth in several rows across the width of the tooth pad; and a relatively long barbels, the maxillaries without any papillae on the leading edge. Pigment pattern with variable spots which are often drawn out to form a finely vermiculated network (Ref. 26674)

Synodontis vanderwaali is a species of upside-down catfish native to Angola, Botswana and Namibia where it occurs in the upper Zambezi River, the Okavango River and Delta and the Cunene River. This species grows to a length of 16.03 centimetres (6.31 in) SL.
