東亞大陸範圍內之淡水域。由西伯利亞至越南皆有，臺灣產於西部河川下游、湖泊及池塘。

食用魚，臺灣南部水庫多有養殖。以手釣或圍網等漁法捕獲。清蒸與油炸皆宜。

體延長而側扁，背部明顯隆起，腹緣淺弧形，胸鰭基部至肛門有完全之腹稜。頭小而側扁，背面稍向下凹。口上位，下頜顯著地突出向上翹。鰓耙數25-29。咽頭齒3列，齒式5.4.2-2.4.4。無鬚。背鰭基部短，外緣平截，背鰭硬棘 III，末根硬棘後緣光滑，分枝軟條 7；臀鰭 硬棘III，分枝軟條25-28；尾鰭叉形，下葉稍長於上葉；腹鰭基部有三角形腋鱗。體被小型圓鱗，側線稍下彎，側線鱗數64-67。背部為青灰色，側線以下體側和腹面白色；體側上半部的每個鱗片後緣有黑色小點。各鰭為淡灰色；成魚的胸鰭、腹鰭及臀鰭為淡橘黃色。雄魚在繁殖季節會出現白色追星。/Culter erythropterus/及/Cultrichthys erythropterus/為本種之同種異名。

初級淡水魚。中大型魚類，適應性強，生活於湖泊、池塘等靜水域或河川之緩流處。游泳能力強，攻擊性亦強，為肉食性魚類，幼魚以水生無脊椎動物及小魚為食，成魚則以小魚為主食，偶而也攝食無脊椎動物。

The predatory carp (Chanodichthys erythropterus), also known as the redfin culter or skygazer, is a species of ray-finned fish in the genus Chanodichthys. This East Asian freshwater cyprinid ranges from the Amur River south to Taiwan and the Red River, as well as Lake Buir in Mongolia. It reaches 102 cm (3 ft 4 in) in length and 9 kg (20 lb) in weight.
