Potentilla proxima Rydberg, sp. nov
Perennial, with a short caudex ; stems less than 1 dm. high, decumbent or ascending, grayish silky-strigose ; basal leaves pinnate with usually 7 approximate leaflets; petioles 1-2 cm. long, silky-strigose ; leaflets 7-15 mm. long, obovate, serrate with lanceovate teeth, silky on both sides and white-tomentose beneath; stem-leaves few; the lower 5-foliolate, the upper 1-3-foliolate ; stipules lanceolate, about 1 cm. long ; cymes 4-7-flowered ; hypanthium silky, in fruit 6 mm. broad ; bractlets linear -lanceolate ; sepals lanceolate ; both about 4 mm. long ; petals obcordate, 5 mm. long ; stamens 20; styles filiform.
Type collected on the divide between Sevier and Beaver Rivers, south of Belknap Peak, Utah. in 1905, Rydberg & Carlton 7369 (herb. N. Y. Bot. Gard.).
Distribution : Mountains of south central Utah to Arizona.
