Hamanumida daedalus (Fabricius)
Papilio daedalus Fabricius, 1775: 482 (Africa).
This species flies only in drier, open places and prefers to rest, the wings spread flat, in the dust of road or around tribal homes. It appears to thrive in ecologically disturbed regions. Liberia: Harbel, 1 3 , II, 1 2 , X; Gbanga, 3 8 , 2 9 , X; Ganta, 1 2 , III, 1 3,1 2 , V; 1 3 , 1 2 , VI; Wanau Forest (Wanau town compound), 3 3,4 2, II, 1 8,2 2, III, 1 2 , X; Bomi Hills (mining company compound), 5 8,1 2 , IV; Yendamalahoun (town compound), 1 8 , IV (Fox) ; eastern Liberia, 17 specimens II to IV (Condamin, 1951); Buttikofer (1890) and Sharpe (1906).

Hamanumida daedalus, the guineafowl butterfly, is a butterfly of the family Nymphalidae and only member of the genus Hamanumida.

Range

It is found in the Afrotropical realm[1] (Natal, Eswatini, Transvaal, Mozambique, Rhodesia, Botswana, tropical Africa (dry lowland areas) and southwest Arabia).

Description

The wingspan is 55–65 mm for males and 60–78 mm for females. Adults are on wing year-round, with peaks in midwinter and summer.[2]

Food plants

The larvae feed on Combretum and Terminalia species.
