The only known species is Petrobium arboreum, called Saint Helena whitewood. It is found in the tree-fern thicket at the top of the central ridge of island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. The plants are either female or hermaphrodite, i.e. the species is gynodioecious.[4]

Se encuentra en la espesura de los bosques entre helechos en la cima de la cordillera central de Isla Santa Elena. Las plantas tiene una sexualidad vegetal femenina o hermafrodita.
Dicranocarpus parviflorus fue descrita por (J.R.Forst. & G.Forst.) R.Br. ex Spreng. y publicado en Systema Vegetabilium, editio decima sexta 3: 445. 1826.[3]
