Pileus corky, rather soft, dimidiate, sessile, laterally connate, plane or convex above, nearly plane below, 2X4-8X0.5-1 cm.; surface aiioderm, tomentose, smooth or slightly tubercular, usually azonate, opaque, isabelline when fresh, becoming avellaneous to umbrinous and finally fuliginous behind, changing immediately to ferruginous or fulvous when bruised ; margin very thin, nearly entire, ochroleucous : context soft, punky, homogeneous, dull-umbrinous, 1-3 mm. thick ; tubes annual, 2-4 mm. long, ochroleucous to isabelline within, mouths irregular, daedaleoid or radially elongate, averaging 0.5 mm. in width, edges uneven, isabelline to grayish-umbrinous or fulvous, the transverse walls often splitting with age and giving the hymenium a lamelloid appearance : spores cylindrical, smooth, hyaline, 9-12X3^//. Type locality : Frankfurt, Germany.
Habitat : Dead deciduous and coniferous wood, structural timber m particular.
Distribution : Temperate regions of North America and Europe.
