Theope es un género de mariposas de la familia Riodinidae.^[3]​

Descripción

La especie tipo es Polyommatus terambus Godart, 1824, según designación posterior realizada por Scudder en 1875.^[4]​^[2]​

Diversidad

Existen 58 especies reconocidas en el género, todas ellas tienen distribución neotropical.^[5]​

Le nom Theope leur a été donné par Edward Doubleday en 1847.

Alors qu'en 1999 ce genre comptait 68 espèces il en compte 92 en 2011, car 24 nouvelles espèces ont été décrites, dont 16 en Guyane ce qui y porte leur nombre à 48^[2].

Theope er en artsrik slekt av dagsommerfugler som tilhører familien Riodinidae.

Utseende

Små til middelsstore (vingespenn 17-45 millimeter) sommerfugler. Hannene er vanligvis blåfarget metalliske på oversiden, men det finnes også arter som er hovedsakelig oransje eller hvite. Undersiden er temmelig ensfarget gulbrun.

Levevis

Disse sommerfuglene lever i fuktig skog, gjerne tropisk regnskog. Larvene er knyttet til maur i underfamilien Dolichoderinae, som steller og beskytter dem. Larven har noen merkelige, klubbeformede vedheng bak hodet, disse har trolig sammenheng med maurene.

Utbredelse

Slekten er utbredt i Mellom- og Sør-Amerika, fra Mexico i nord til det sørlige Brasil i sør.

Theope é o gênero mais diverso de riodinídeos mirmecófilos.^[1] Atualmente são reconhecidas 69 espécies. Os adultos são muitas vezes confundidos com Lycaenidae devido à coloração azulada na face dorsal, contrastando com a coloração pálida da face ventral. O gênero é pouco coletado e representado nas coleções, sendo que muitas espécies são conhecidas apenas pela descrição original.
