Plants annual, 60-100 cm tall, glabrous. Stem erect; branchlets elongate, slender, remotely leafy. Leaves alternate; lower and middle leaves long petiolate; upper leaves shortly petiolate or sessile; petiole 3-6 cm, slender; leaf blade 4-7 × 2.5-3.5 cm, membranous, in middle leaves ovate or ovate-oblong, lateral veins 7-11 pairs, apex subrounded; in upper leaves oblong, base cordate, margin coarsely crenate, teeth retuse, apex obtuse. Inflorescences in upper leaf axils, 1- or 2(or 3)-flowered; peduncles shorter than leaves, 2-3 cm. Pedicels 1-1.5 cm, bracteate at middle; bracts persistent, linear-subulate, ca. 2 mm. Flowers deep purple-red, large, 3-3.5 cm deep. Lateral sepals 2, obliquely ovate or suborbicular, 6-7 mm, membranous, inequilateral, apex cuspidate, reticulate. Lower sepal purple spotted, broadly funnelform, 1.5-2 cm deep, gradually narrowed into an incurved spur 1-1.5 cm, with a groove; mouth vertical, 1-1.1 cm wide, tip acute. Upper petal cucullate, orbicular, 1-1.2 cm wide, apex slightly emarginate, abaxial midvein thickened, cristate above middle, crista long, elephant-trunk-shaped; lateral united petals not clawed, 2.5-3 cm, 2-lobed; basal lobes broadly oblong, ca. 1.2 cm wide; distal lobes broader, gradually narrowed; auricle inflexed, purple spotted, long. Filaments linear, very short; anthers acute. Ovary erect, fusiform. Capsule linear, 2.5-3 cm, curved. Seeds few, brown, oblong, 3-4 mm, smooth. Fl. Aug, fr. Sep-Oct.
