Platypedia areolata is found over much of the northwestern United States and southern British Columbia. It is known from California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming (U.S.A.) and British Columbia (Canada), with one specimen having been collected almost at the southern Alaska border along the coast of British Columbia. It occurs in several ecosystems, including the Pacific coastal/Cascadian forests, intermountain forests, Rocky Mountain forests, California forests, and chaparral. It has been reported in association with alder (Alnus spp.), sumac (Rhus spp.), balsam trees (Populus spp.), and manzanita (Arctostaphylos spp.) and to oviposit in many deciduous fruit and olive (Olea europaea L.) trees.
