Plants annual, 0.4-1 m tall, glabrous. Stem many branched. Leaves alternate, sessile or shortly petiolate; leaf blade broadly lanceolate, 5-15 × ca. 6 cm, with stipitate basal glands, both surfaces sparsely hairy, lateral veins 6-8 pairs, base acuminate, margin serrate, apex caudate. Inflorescences axillary, racemose, 3-6-flowered, often 5-flowered; peduncles 10-20 cm. Pedicels 1.4-2 cm, elongate at fruiting, bracteate at base; bracts subulate, ca. 2 mm. Flowers red, pale red, or white, ca. 3 cm deep, 1.4-2 cm wide. Lateral sepals 2, subulate, ca. 2 mm, 3-veined. Lower sepal navicular-cornute, 2.5-3 cm deep, narrowed into an erect, stout spur; mouth oblique, ca. 1.4 cm wide. Upper petal suborbicular, 1.5-1.8 cm wide, base deeply cordate, apex obtusely cuspidate, abaxial midvein thickened, narrowly carinate, with 2 cristae; lateral united petals ± clawed, 2.5-3 cm, 2-lobed; basal lobes orbicular; distal lobes dolabriform, larger, apically often retuse; auricle linear, 1-1.3 cm, inserted into spur. Filaments short, compressed; anthers acute. Ovary clavate. Capsule ca. 3 cm. Seeds 5-7, black, ovoid-orbicular, ca. 3 × 2 mm. Fl. Aug-Sep.
