Description of Frontonia marina

A very common species of peniculine ciliates found in interstitial sands. Elongate, may be very large, 150-600 microns long. The anterior is wider than the posterior. The posterior is more pointed than rounded. Dorsoventrally flattened. Pre- and post-oral sutures are clearly visible. The oral aperture is small. The macronucleus is large with two accompanying micronuclei. There is a single, small central contractile vacuole with radiating collecting canals. Trichocysts are numerous and fine.
