E. gryllus is a small species, about 16mm SVL. The color is yellowish brown to green. A middorsal stripe and a light inverted parenthesis may be present (Rivero 1998).

This species is found in the Sierra de Luquillo and the Cordillera Central of Puerto Rico. It is found above 450m of elevation (Schwartz & Henderson, 1991).

The males usually call from bromeliads, rarely from less than 1.5m from the ground. The call is a high chip (Rivero 1998). The calling activity is highest at dawn (Villanueva-Rivera, pers obs).
