Megastylis is a genus of flowering plants from the orchid family, Orchidaceae. It contains 6 known species, all native to Vanuatu and New Caledonia.^[1]

Megastylis es un género de orquídeas de hábitos terrestres. Es originario de Nueva Caledonia y Vanuatu. Tiene 10 especies descritas y de estas solo 7 aceptadas.^[2]​

Descripción

Son orquídeas de gran tamaño, con hábitos terrestres a semi-litofita que se encuentran en Nueva Caledonia y Vanuatu como un grupo de hierbas, con hoja perenne con tubérculos y sin tallo, o muy corto, no ramificado que lleva de 1 a unos pocas hojas, basales, pecioladas, ovadas-lanceoladas, coriáceas y agudas, marginadas con dientes negros. Florece en una inflorescencia erecta, terminal, con varias a muchas flores.^[3]​

Taxonomía

El género fue descrito por (Schltr.) Schltr. y publicado en Botanische Jahrbücher für Systematik, Pflanzengeschichte und Pflanzengeographie 45: 379. 1911.^[4]​

Naamgeving en etymologie

De botanische naam Megastylis is afkomstig van het Oudgriekse 'megas' (groot) en 'stylis' (zuil)^[bron?], wat net als de Engelstalige naam slaat op het grote gynostemium of zuiltje.

Kenmerken

Megastylis zijn terrestrische orchideeën. Ze worden gekenmerkt door een in verhouding zeer groot gynostemium of zuiltje.

Voorkomen

Megastylis-soorten zijn beperkt tot het Australaziatisch gebied, voornamelijk Nieuw-Caledonië en Vanuatu. De planten groeien op lage hoogten in het regenwoud.

Taxonomie

Het geslacht heeft lang deel uitgemaakt van de subtribus Caladeniinae in de tribus Diurideae, maar is onlangs op basis van DNA-onderzoek verhuisd naar de tribus Cranichideae^[1].

Het geslacht bevat negen soorten. De typesoort is Megastylis gigas (Schltr.) Schltr. (1911)
