Identification features (Louette 2010):

Adult

Upperparts: grey

Throat: white or grey

Breast and belly: most: (almost) unbarred rufous; some: as toussenelii

Flanks: rufous

Thighs: greyish white

Tail: blackish with three relatively large white spots

Irides: usually yellow, occasionally orange

Legs and feet: bright yellow

Immature

Upperparts: blackish brown

Throat: white

Breast: few or no spots

Belly: white

Flanks: variable; some heavily streaked

Thighs: white

Legs and feet: yellow
