Prigogine's greenbul (Chlorocichla prigoginei) is a species of songbird in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is found only in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. It is threatened by habitat loss.

Taxonomy and systematics

Prigogine's bulbul is one of five species of bulbul in the genus Chlorocichla. It was originally described as Chlorocichla prigoginei by Antoon de Roo in 1967. The generic name Chlorocichla comes from the Greek χλωρος (khlōros), meaning yellow, and κιχλη (kikhlē), meaning thrush. The specific epithet prigoginei is in honour of Alexandre Prigogine, a Russian-Belgian ornithologist. Alternate names for Prigogine's greenbul include the Butembo greenbul, Congo greenbul and Prigogine's bulbul. It is monotypic.^[2]

Distribución y hábitat

Se encuentra únicamente en los montes y mesetas al noreste del lago Eduardo. Su hábitat natural son los bosques húmedos tropicales montanos. Está amenazado por la pérdida de hábitat.

Prigogines buulbuul (Chlorocichla prigoginei) is een zangvogel uit de familie Pycnonotidae (buulbuuls). Het is een bedreigde, endemische vogelsoort in Congo-Kinshasa, die pas in 1967 werd beschreven.^[2] De vogel is vernoemd naar de Belgische ornitholoog Alexandre Prigogine.

Kenmerken

De vogel is 20 cm lang, een middelgrote soort buulbuul die overwegend dof olijfgroen is gekleurd. Kenmerkend zijn de gele keel en een vage, lichte oogring en een grijze vlek op de oorstreek. De vogel kan verward worden met de dottergele buulbuul en de geelborstbuulbuul, maar die zijn lichter gekleurd en iets groter.^[3]

Verspreiding en leefgebied

Deze soort is endemisch in het oosten van Congo-Kinshasa in het gebied van de Lendu, een hoogvlakte ten westen van het Edwardmeer. Het leefgebied bestaat uit dichte ondergroei in stukjes montaan bos op 1300 tot 1800 m boven zeeniveau in het bovenstroomse gebied van rivieren.^[3]

Status

Prigogines buulbuul heeft een beperkt verspreidingsgebied en daardoor is de kans op uitsterven aanwezig. De grootte van de populatie werd in 2012 door BirdLife International geschat op 3,5 tot 15 duizend individuen en de populatie-aantallen nemen af. Het leefgebied wordt aangetast door ongecontroleerde ontbossing waarbij natuurlijk bos wordt omgezet in gebied voor agrarisch gebruik en menselijke bewoning. Om deze redenen staat deze soort als bedreigd op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN.^[1]

Utseende och läte

Prigoginegrönbulbylen är en medelstor bulbyl med en kroppslängd på 20 centimeter. Den är rätt färglöst olivgrön med gul strupe, grått kring tygeln samt en blek ögonring. Den kan förväxlas med både sånggrönbulbyl och gulbukig grönbulbyl, men är mindre och mörkare. Lätet är okänt.^[1]

Utbredning

Fågeln förekommer i skogar nedanför bergen i östra Demokratiska republiken Kongo (Lenduplatån och Butembo).^[3]

Status

IUCN kategoriserar arten som starkt hotad.^[1]

Namn

Fågelns svenska och vetenskapliga artnamn hedrar Alexandre Prigogine (1913-1991), rysk-belgisk ornitolog, geolog och kemist som sponsrade expeditioner till tropiska Afrika.^[4]
