The leaf axils of the bromeliad Aechmea paniculigera provide nursery habitat for the crab Metopaulias depressus. M.depressus empties the axils from organic debris to prepare them for a nursery. The crab feeds its young with snails and millipedes and protects them from predators – damselfly nymphs (Diceratobasis macrogaster) and spiders.
