Colour in life: overall chocolate brown, primary spines pale brown where not encrusted (Humphreys, 1981). Also distributed in SE Arabia, W India, Pakistan, Maldive area, Ceylon, Bay of Bengal, East Indies, Philippine, China and south Japan (Clark & Rowe, 1971); Australia (Rowe & Gates, 1995). Ecology: benthic, continental shelf. General distribution: tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific Ocean, depth range 38-141 m. (Rowe & Gates, 1995).
