Abbott's Moray Eel

Dark purplish brown with small yellow spots which is sparse on the tail (Ref. 3257). This species is similar to Gymnothorax meleagris in having biserial maxillary teeth, with inner and outer series about equal in length; intermaxillary teeth arranged in a peripheral series, a median series, and an intermediate series on each side between the median and peripheral series. (Ref. 74922).

Feeds on fish and benthic crustaceans (Ref. 3921).

Benthic in crevices (Ref. 58302). Feeds on crustaceans and small fishes (Ref. 89972).

廣泛分布於印度-太平洋的熱帶海域。在臺灣見於基隆、澳底、南方澳、成功、小琉球、澎湖等地。

一般可利用延繩釣、手釣等漁法捕獲。可食用或飼養玩賞。

體延長而呈圓柱狀，尾部側扁。吻圓；上、下頜略呈鉤狀。牙齒皆為尖牙狀，牙略彎勾；頜齒2-3列，頜間齒3列，鋤骨齒單列，下頜前側頜齒雙列。脊椎骨數124-127。體色暗紫褐色；魚體表有許多黃白色斑點，愈靠近頭部黃白斑點愈稠密，尾部的黃白斑點分布較疏；軀幹有3-4列頭尾方向規則排列的較大紫黑圓斑；口內的斑點形式和體表類似；眼虹彩橘黃色；尾部末端略呈白色。

主要棲息於珊瑚礁平台和斜坡深度 1-15 m 處。喜歡捕食魚類。體腔中、皮膚下層及腸繫膜上經常可發現有多量線蟲寄生。成熟卵巢呈黃色。

Abbott's moray eel (Gymnothorax eurostus), also known as the stout moray, is a moray eel of the family Muraenidae, found in the Indo-Pacific, antitropical in distribution. It is found in the eastern Pacific from Costa Rica to Easter Island, at depths to 40 m (130 feet). Its length is up to 60 cm (24 inches). Abbott's moray eel is a shallow-water, inshore reef species, though not often seen. They are voracious nocturnal carnivores feeding mostly on reef fishes.
