body elongate; mouth large, premaxillary teeth uneven with at least one tooth, usually the fourth, greatly enlarged; vomer with teeth. Pseudobranch absent. Meristic data (eastern North Atlantic only): gillrakers on first arch 23–24 (22–25), 4–5 on hypobranchial; no raker in articulation of epi- and ceratobranchial; branchiostegal rays 14 (15), (5) 6 on epihyal. Dorsal-fin rays 12–14; pectoral finrays 9–11; pelvic finrays 6; Anal-fin rays 17–18; dorsal and anal fin origins about opposite; last dorsal and Anal-fin rays not split to base; adipose fin absent; anus closer to pelvic bases than to anal fin origin. Vertebrae 31(32–33). Pyloric caecae 4. Scales present. Photophores SO absent, ORB 1, OP 2, BR 10 11, IV 3 + 10; VAV 5, 2 (3) anterior to genital opening; AC 14–15, 2–3 between last anal and first procurrent ray; OA 8; supra-caudal gland weakly but distinctly developed, reticulum extending less distinctly anteriorly, along either side of dorsal base, to dorsal origin; infra-caudal gland similar but confined to procurrent ray. Color of light to dark brown, with transparent area anterior to anal origin; gular area white; dorsal and Anal-fin rays pigmented; meningeal pigment extends forwards to at least level of posterior margin of eye, often anterior to pineal body; internasal area pigmented.

Meso- to bathypelagic (Ref. 58302). Oceanic, precise depth range dependent upon developmental stage, latitude, season (Ref. 4769). Does not exhibit diel vertical migrations (Ref. 4769). Lipid content is 2.3 % in fresh body weight and wax ester is 34.0 % in total lipids (Ref. 9193).
