Bathypterois dubius, the Mediterranean spiderfish, a lizardfish of the family Ipnopidae, is found in the Eastern Atlantic, as well as the Mediterranean and northwest Atlantic.

Bathypterois dubius est une espèce de poissons de la famille des Ipnopidae.
Le mâle peut mesurer jusqu'à 20,5 cm, la femelle jusqu'à 20,4 cm[1].
Il peut être la proie du pailona commun (Centroscymnus coelolepis).
Le poisson peut être l'hôte de copépodes parasites tels que Sarcotretes eristaliformis[2].
On trouve cette espèce en Méditerranée et dans l'Atlantique jusqu'au golfe de Guinée au sud, les côtes de Nouvelle-Écosse à l'ouest et l'Islande au nord. Les individus des populations méditerranéennes sont les plus petits de l'espèce, ceux habitant le sud de la répartition atlantique sont de taille intermédiaire et ceux au nord, à partir du nord de la France et des îles Britanniques, sont les plus grands[3].
Il vit entre 260 et 2 800 m de profondeur, généralement entre 2100 et 2 300 m, ce qui en fait une espèce abyssale.
L'espèce admet pour synonyme Bathypterois mediterraneus Bauchot, 1962 et désignant autrefois les populations méditerranéennes. Le nom de genre vient du grec bathys, signifiant « profond » et de pterois, signifiant « ailé »[1].

Si incontra nel mar Mediterraneo, di cui è endemica. Nei mari italiani è noto nell'Arcipelago Toscano e nel mar Jonio ma non è comune, ma forse solo a causa dell'inaccessibilità dei fondali che frequenta.
È presente almeno fino a 2800 metri di profondità.
Questo pesce ha un aspetto piuttosto caratteristico. Il corpo è allungato e fusiforme, più compresso lateralmente nella parte posteriore. La bocca è grande ed armata di piccoli denti. Gli occhi sono minuscoli. La pinna anale è impiantata subito sotto la fine della pinna dorsale. Le pinne pettorali sono costituite da due porzioni, quella inferiore ha raggi molto corti mentre quella superiore è costituita da due soli raggi molto allungati, rigidi e fusi per circa due terzi della loro lunghezza. Anche le pinne ventrali presentano alcuni raggi allungati e rigidi. Le squame sono grandi e ben visibili.
Il colore dell'animale è blu molto scuro; dopo la morte assume una tinta nera.
Misura circa 20 cm di lunghezza massima.
Si ciba di invertebrati bentonici.
Le abitudini ed il modo di vita di questa specie sono quasi completamente ignoti. Si crede che questo pesce si appoggi sul fondale fangoso senza affondarvi utilizzando i raggi allungati delle pinne ventrali e pettorali come un treppiede. Questo comportamento è noto con certezza per la specie Bathypterois grallator, occasionale nel Mediterraneo.
Bathypterois mediterraneus è un vecchio nome per gli esemplari mediterranei di questa specie, oggi considerato sinonimo di B. dubius.
