體呈卵圓形而側扁。吻短而略尖。眼中大,上側位。口小,上頜骨末端不及眼前緣;齒單列,齒端具缺刻。眶下骨具鱗,後緣則平滑;前鰓蓋骨後緣亦平滑。體被大櫛鱗;側線之有孔鱗片19-21個。背鰭單一,軟條部延長而呈尖形,硬棘XIII,軟條13-14;臀鰭硬棘II,軟條13-14;胸鰭鰭條18-20;尾鰭叉形,末端呈尖形,上下葉外側鰭條不延長呈絲狀。體呈暗褐色,體側有1-4條淡色橫帶。胸鰭基底上方有一小黑斑;鰓蓋骨後緣上方具黑點;尾柄上無黑點。尾鰭黃褐色。

棲地

The yellowtail sergeant (Abudefduf notatus)[4] is a species of damselfish in the family Pomacentridae native to the Indo-Pacific. It can grow to a maximum total length of 17 centimetres (6.7 in).[5]

Distribution and habitat

This species of damselfish is found in the Indo-Pacific. In the Indian Ocean, it occurs in the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, eastern Africa, Madagascar, Seychelles, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, the Andaman Sea, Indonesia, and Australia.[5] In the Pacific Ocean, it occurs in the Gulf of Thailand, Indonesia, the Great Barrier Reef around Australia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, New Caledonia, and various islands in the western Pacific Ocean.[5] It typically occurs at depths of 1 to 12 metres (3.3 to 39.4 ft).[5] Adults live in coral reefs and lagoons while juveniles are found in the open sea.[5]

Description

The species can grow up to a maximum length of up to 17 centimetres (6.7 in).[5] It is gray with 5 vertical black bands and a yellow caudal fin. It has 13 dorsal spines, 13 to 14 dorsal soft rays, 2 anal spines, and 13 to 14 anal soft rays.[5]

Behavior

Abudefduf notatus forms roving aggregations which are noted to be rather difficult to approach. It is an oviparous species, with individuals forming distinct pairs during breeding and males guarding and aerating eggs.[5]

In the aquarium

Abudefduf notatus is found in the aquarium trade.[6]
