A medium-sized or tall tree; twigs brown, densely puberulent; leaves odd-pinnate, 3-5 dm. long; petioles and rachis puberulent, the petioles 4-12 cm. long, prominently grooved at the base; leaflets 5-11, elliptic to oval, 12-25 cm. long, 6-12 cm. broad, acuminate at the apex, acute at the base, petioluled, glabrous above, the midrib and lateral veins impressed, puberulent beneath when young, glabrous in age; panicle axillary, the branches densely puberulent, angled; sepals orbicular, fimbriate, strongly imbricate, hirsute on the back, 2-2.5 mm. broad; petals obovate, puberulent, 5-5.5 mm. long, 2.5-3.5 mm. broad, coriaceous, ciliate; staminal tube with long tapering acuminate lobes between the anthers, hirsute above on the inside; anthers oblong, glabrous; ovary sessile in a prominent saucer-like disk; capsule ellipsoid, 3-3.5 cm. long, 1.6-2 cm. broad, woody, 1-seeded. Type locality: Near Caracas.
Distribution: Guadeloupe, Dominica, and Martinique; also in northern South America.
