Annual or biennial small herbaceous shrub, 0.75-1.5 m tall. Stems grey-green to olive, velvety, branched fro the base. Leaves alternate, broadly ovate-cordate, green, slightly paler below; margins coarsely serrate. Flowers in axillary on the main branches on long pedicels, 3-5.5 cm in diameter, yellow. Calyx lobes triangular to ovate lanceolate with a long pointed apex. Fruit depressed-spherical, 13 × 20 mm., stellate hairy. The flower often remain closed on overcast days, opening very quickly when the sun comes out.
